Captain Lee Hall of the Texas Rangers was prominent in the 1860s and 1870s. He was one of the “men with Winchesters” who guarded the Rio Grande. Who else but Captain Lee Hall was the writer’s Ranger “blond as a Viking, quiet as a deacon, dangerous as a machine gun?” He was a dashing figure of the West, a man of gallant, striking and individual personality, with heart, brains, and courage. His life touched on many of the most picturesque phases of the opening of the West. The author’s narrative with vivacious handling of factual material makes excellent and informing reading.
