As an officer of the 7th Cavalry and General Custer’s brother-in-law, James Calhoun served as Acting Assistant Adjutant General during the Custer-led Black Hills Expedition. The discovery of gold during the 1874 campaign, in the heart of Sioux territory, precipitated another rush on Indian domain – a rush that led to further bloody conflict. Calhoun’s diary offers insights and opinions of significant events as well as numerous letters, reports and dispatches of importance to the expedition.
