The author was at age 30 when the Civil War broke out, enlisting in the First Regiment of Virginia Cavalry under the command of Lt. Col. J.E.B. Stuart. A Civil Engineer by Profession, Blackford worked on railroads before the war. During the war he provided valuable services not only as a cavalryman but also as an engineer during the conflict. Here is a narrative that is the only one describing by examples and day-by-day report what the Engineer Troop Accomplished. Blackford took part in almost all the great battles of the Army of Northern Virginia.
As a member of Stuart’s staff he came into close contact with the great cavalry leader and numerous other legendary characters. His recollections are exciting and entertaining filled with descriptons of battles, raids and sieges as well as the Army life from 1861 to 1865.
