The author Thomas Marquis gathered information on the Custer Battle from surviving Native Americans who participated in that battle. In addition, notes from William H. White, a soldier with Gibbon in 1876, who viewed the scene of the battle two days after are included. White was with the Montana column from Fort Shaw.
