Ten Years in the Saddle ~ The Memoir of William Woods Averell 1851-1862
Edited by Edward Eckert and Nicholas Amato
Condition; good, shelf wear on dust jacket over hard cover
Presidio Press, 1978
Here is a previously unpublished memoir of William Woods Averell, a Union cavalry general, a West Point graduate, who served in the New Mexico territory and early in the Civil War was placed in command of a cavalry regiment. Averell began collecting material in the early 1880s for several articles on life in the cavalry, leaning toward a full-scale autobiography. Work on the manuscript began in 1891. By the time of his death on February 3, 1900 the manuscript had not been completed. Yet with the help of one of his decendents and two editors, the manuscript was finished and is published in this book. A lively read.
