The son of a senator from Kentucky, Theodore Talbot started west in 1845 on his second tour, this time with John Charles Fremont on an expedition to California. Talbot’s long letters to his mother and sister are the most detailed source available on the early months of that expedition and have never before been published. After California he was assigned to Vera Cruz, Mexico, where he commented on the returning troops during the last days of the war. Ordered to Oregon in 1849, after a long sea voyage around the Horn and to Hawaii, he joined the first army detachment along the Columbia River. Numerous encounters with leading explorers in the vast west are presented for the first time.
