During the Indian Wars 1866 – 1891, the enlisted men in the U.S. Army crossed the frontier creating the framework of law and order within which settlement and development became possible. Here is the story of the common soldier in the military past. Author Rickey interviewed over 300 living veterans who supplied information about their Army experiences. Many survived to the mid 1950’s and were able to share these personal interviews and additional correspondence with the author providing a window to life in the regular Army.
