This is the story of Custer’s 1874 expedition to the Black Hills of South Dakota as told by five newspaper correspondents who accompanied him. Consisting of over 1,000 men this was the largest military invading force of its type utilized to that date on the plains.

Each chapter is a self-contained chronicle, ranging from the pre-expedition beginnings to the concluding dispatches. Biographical sketches about the reporters appear at the start of each chapter.
