The story of Pvt. White is of special interest because it relates to his colorful military career during the time he served with the 2nd U.S. Cavalry stationed at Fort Ellis, Montana Territory. White tells of his enlistment; the life of a soldier in frontier barracks; the trip escorting Sec. of War Belknap through untrampled Yellowstone Park; with Brisbin on the relief of beleaguered Fort Pease; with Gibbon’s Montana column during the hostile Indian campaign of 1876; the Snake River exploration journey with Lt. Doane; the Nez Perce campaign in pursuit of Chief Joseph and later, summer roaming and romancing while with the Crow Indian tribe. This is truly a remarkable account by one who was there.
