Luftwaffe Generalmajor Roderich Cescotti (1919–2015), nicknamed “Chess”, was a highly versatile pilot and officer who served across multiple fronts in World War II and later went on to become a general in the modern German Bundeswehr .
Key highlights of his extensive WWII career include:
- Early Bomber Operations: Starting in 1940, he flew Heinkel He 111 bombers with Kampfgeschwader 26 (KG 26), participating in the Battle of Britain.
- Arctic & Reconnaissance Missions: He later transitioned to torpedo bombers, attacking Allied Arctic convoys, and flew long-range reconnaissance missions as far as Greenland .
- Stalingrad Resupply: In January 1943, he flew dangerous re-supply sorties into the besieged city of Stalingrad .
- Late-War Commands: He held several staff assignments before finishing the war as a Gruppenkommandeur (Group Commander) in Jagdgeschwader 301 (JG 301), flying the advanced Focke-Wulf Ta 152 fighter.
- Cescotti was awarded the German Cross in Gold for his wartime service . Following the war and a period as a POW, he rejoined the newly formed West German Air Force in 1955, eventually rising to the rank of Generalmajor.
