Wilfred Dudley Smithers was a young teamster on a pack-mule train in 1916 when he first saw the Rio Grande’s Big Bend. He vowed to return chronicling the area during the teens, 20s and 30s which were violent years in the Big Bend. Pancho Villa, Chico Cano and “Gacho” were among the scores of bandits eluding the U.S. Cavalry while Smithers recorded the activity. He also successfully recorded the Big Bend lifestyle in small towns, mining villages and camps.
