The seven Rangers in this volume along with countless others, made a special contribution to the Ranger tradition and to Texas history during the early days of the organization. Conceived by Stephen F. Austin, the Rangers employed ten men from a group of volunteers. They were ordered to range over wide areas between designated rivers and to scout the movements of the Indians. From these ranging activities, the Rangers derived their name.
