Travelling in hostile country causes the mountain man to check his back trail as he is possibly a rear guard for a trapper party on the move. His senses are alert as he maintains the upper hand in order to avoid ambush and travels in water to help eliminate a trail.
He wears a wide-brimmed felt hat which was popular in summer because of its ability to provide shade from the sun. He rides a Santa Fe style saddle and carries his case rifle across the pommel. Tied to the horn is an Indian style pipe bat.
As his horse looks ahead to see where they are bound, the rider looks back with great CAUTION.
