MAJOR WALTER NOWOTNY, Focke-Wulf 190 A-6

Image size 15 3/4" x 19 1/2" with margins; 19" x 23" overall
Limited edition of 750 s/n prints with 50 Artist's Proofs.

The Painting: Austrian-born Walter Nowotny was one of the most popular and successful pilots in the Luftwaffe. Starting off slowly, his career became meteoric after his initial victories, eventually scoring a total of 258.

Among his achievements, he was the first pilot to reach 250 victories, at least twice he scored 10 victories in the same day, he was one of only nine fighter pilots to be awarded Diamonds to his Knight's Cross; and he commanded the first Me 262 Jet Fighter Squadron. On 8 November 1944, Major Walter Nowotny was killed in his stricken Me 262 during an air battle wtih P-51 Mustangs.

Nowotny was flying his Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-6 work number W. Nr, 470006 with JG 54 Greenhearts when he achieved his 25Oth victory, an IL-2, which occured over Orel, Russia.

JG 54 was noted for its innovative and non-standard color schemes. Although the exact shades are not known it is assumed the upper colors were a medium green and a dark olive green. There was a small white number 8 in the Kommandeur Chevron while under the cockpit was a small white number 13. The lower part of the engine cowling, the under portion of the wing tips, the fuselage band and the lower area of the rudder were yellow. The outer wing guns have been removed and faired over.

Although constructed primarily of wood, the Russian IL-2 was difficult to bring down due to the heavy armor plate. Some of the pilots nicknamed it "cement bomber". One of the methods used to shoot it down was to approach it from underneath and destroy the oil cooler.

HANS JOACHIM MARSEILLE Bf 109F-2Z Trop

Image size l6 l/2" X 22" with margins; 20' X 25 1/2" overall
Limited edition of 750 s/n prints with 50 Artist's Proofs.

The Painting: "Jochen" Marseille was considered by some of his contemporaries to be the most talented pilot in the Luftwaffe. General Adolf Galland even referred to him as the "unequaled virtuoso of all fighter pilots".

After a shaky beginning, enlisting at the age of 18 and with discipline problems, he achieved 7 victories in the Battle of Britain but was in turn shot down four times. In April, 1941, he was sent to Africa to fly with I./JG 27. Marseille soon developed his shooting ability and in conjunction with his fearless flying became the "Star of Africa". With a reputation of being a rebel to military discipline and a ladies' man, plus his uncanny exploits as a fighter pilot, he became a national hero to the German people. His accomplishments have become legend.

On 1 September 1942, he shot down 17 British fighters on three missions, 8 aircraft in 10 minutes. Many times he had multiple victories, eventually to become the most successful Luftwaffe pilot to fly against Western opponents. He was awarded Germany's highest honor, the Knight's Cross with Oakleaves, Swords and Diamonds.

HANS-ULRICH RUDEL JUNKERS
Ju 87 B-2 Stuka

Image size 17" X 24" with margins; 27 1/2" X 20 3/4" overall
Limited edition of 750 s/n prints with 50 Artist's Proofs.

The Painting: The classic Ju 87 B-2 Stuka, in all of its ugliness, was made famous by Rudel. It is incredible what he accomplished with an aircraft that was outdated and vulnerable in the Western Theatre. The markings depict late 1941 when Rudel flew with the Staff of III./SG 2. Artist Jerry Crandall personally interviewed Valerian Dill, one of Rudel's instructors for details about the aircraft and its pilots, who also furnished valuable original photos.

Hans-Ulrich Rudel joined the Luftwaffe in 1936, eventually becoming the most highly decorated pilot in history being awarded the only golden Knights cross with Oakleaves, Swords and Diamonds. In addition he was the first officer to fly 1000 missions, eventually recording a total of 2530 sorties, destroyed one battleship, one cruiser, one destroyer, trains, anti-aircraft guns, landing craft, about 800 vehicles and over 500 soviet tanks.
